FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Epoxy Flooring

Have questions about epoxy flooring or our services? We’ve answered some common questions below. If you don’t see your question, feel free to give us a call – our friendly experts at AquaTight Concrete Coating are happy to provide more information.

A: Epoxy flooring is a specialized floor coating made from a two-part epoxy resin. When the resin and hardener mix, a chemical reaction turns them into a solid plastic-like material that bonds to the concrete. Unlike simple paint, true epoxy creates a thick, durable layer over your concrete that is tightly adhered. It’s often applied in multiple coats (primer, color coat, clear topcoat) to build a floor that is seamless and highly resistant to damage. Epoxy flooring can be decorative, with options like colored flakes or metallic pigments, or just a solid color for a clean look. The end result is a floor that’s glossy, tough, and longer-lasting than most other finishes.

A: Epoxy floors are known for their long lifespan. In a residential setting (like a garage or basement), a professionally installed epoxy floor can last 10–20 years or more with proper maintenance. Many homeowners find their epoxy floors still look great even after decades of use. Commercial and industrial epoxy floors also have excellent longevity, though in extremely high-traffic or heavy-duty areas they may wear slightly faster. The key factors are proper surface preparation, quality of the epoxy product, and whether a suitable topcoat is used for the environment. Rest assured, AquaTight uses high-grade materials and techniques to maximize the life of your floor. And if eventually the surface does dull or wear, it can often be refreshed with a new topcoat rather than replacing the whole system.

A: When dry, epoxy flooring is not particularly slippery – it has a similar texture to a basketball court or a glossy tile. However, because epoxy creates a smooth, non-porous surface, it can become slippery when wet or oily. In areas that might get wet (like a garage with snow melt or a pool deck), we address this by adding anti-slip additives. During installation, we can mix in or broadcast materials like silica sand or aluminum oxide into the top layer, which creates a subtle texture that improves grip. We can also use decorative flakes which not only look great but add slight unevenness to break up the smooth surface. These measures make the finished floor much safer and slip-resistant, without significantly changing the look. So, while pure epoxy is smooth, AquaTight will customize your floor’s finish to ensure it’s safe for its intended use. Always use caution with any flooring when it’s wet, but know that we have solutions to minimize any slip risk.

A: One of the best features of epoxy flooring is how easy it is to maintain. For regular cleaning, simply sweep or use a leaf blower to remove dust and debris. When you want to mop, use a mild soap or floor cleaner with warm water – there’s no need for harsh chemicals or special polishes. Thanks to epoxy’s non-porous surface, dirt and spills stay on top and wipe away easily. Tire marks or light stains can usually be removed with a gentle scrubbing using a soft deck brush and a household cleaner. Unlike concrete, epoxy doesn’t shed dust and you won’t have grout lines like tile that collect grime. An occasional sweeping and mopping is all it takes to keep it clean and shiny. Also, epoxy is naturally resistant to mold and bacteria, so it’s a great low-maintenance flooring for all sorts of environments. We’ll provide you with simple care instructions after installation. Follow those and your floor will continue to look like new for many years.

A: The installation time depends on the size of the area and the condition of your concrete, but most residential garage or basement floors take 1-2 days for us to prep and apply the epoxy system. After the epoxy and topcoat are applied, the floor needs time to cure (harden). You can typically walk on the floor in about 24 hours, but we recommend avoiding heavy items or vehicle traffic for at least 3-5 days to allow full curing. In colder weather, curing may be a bit slower. For commercial projects, we often use faster-curing formulations to minimize downtime, or section the work to keep your business running. Keep in mind that epoxy reaches its full hardness over several days – even though it might feel dry earlier, giving it that cure time will ensure it achieves maximum durability. We’ll give you specific guidance based on the product we use. Overall, compared to alternatives (like a week or more for concrete to fully dry if re-poured), epoxy installation is relatively quick. And once it’s cured, you’re good to go for the long haul!

A: Absolutely! Epoxy flooring is highly customizable. You’re not stuck with a dull gray (unless you want a gray). We offer a broad palette of colors, blends, and effects to achieve the look you’re after. Some popular options include:

  • Solid Colors: Classic choices like gray, tan, or white are common for garages and basements, but you can also go bold with reds, blues, or even custom color matches.

  • Decorative Flake or Chip Floors: We broadcast multicolored flakes into the epoxy for a terrazzo-like appearance. You can choose flake blends that resemble granite, or team colors, etc. This option is great for garages and rec rooms.

  • Metallic Epoxy: This trendy option uses special pigments to create a swirling, metallic sheen – each floor is one-of-a-kind art. It’s popular for showrooms or modern interiors.

  • Patterns and Logos: With techniques like using different colored areas or stencils, we can create geometric patterns, safety stripes, or even embed a company logo under the clear coat for commercial clients.
Epoxy’s high customizability and wide range of colors mean your floor will be uniquely yours. During our consultation, we’ll show you samples and discuss the best design for your space. So dream big – we can likely make it happen on your floor!

A: The cost of an epoxy floor can vary depending on several factors: the size of the area, the condition of the existing concrete (does it need repairs or extensive prep), the type of epoxy system and finish you choose, and any special requirements (like extra thick coatings or decorative effects). Generally, epoxy flooring is cost-effective compared to other high-end flooring options. You’re essentially getting a new floor without the expense of ripping out the old one or laying down tile/wood. For a standard two-car garage, epoxy coating typically ranges from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars, depending on customization. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote so you’ll know exactly what your project will cost. Importantly, an epoxy floor’s long lifespan and low maintenance can make it cheaper in the long run – you won’t be replacing or deep-cleaning it frequently, as you might with other floors. We strive to offer competitive pricing and top value for the quality we deliver. Contact us, and we’ll be happy to assess your space and give you an accurate estimate tailored to your needs.
